Small Prophets Reaches Apple TV on October 7, but UK Viewers Have to Wait

Apple has acquired the six-part Mackenzie Crook comedy for an international October release, while its UK Apple TV window remains set for 2027 after a BBC debut.

Small Prophets will premiere on Apple TV on October 7, 2026 outside the United Kingdom, bringing Mackenzie Crook's six-part comedy to a wider international audience after its BBC debut earlier this year. The regional exception is easy to miss: Apple says UK subscribers will receive the series in 2027, not alongside the October rollout.

That means the announcement is an international acquisition rather than a new production order or a remake. Small Prophets has already aired on BBC Two and BBC iPlayer in the UK. Apple acquired the completed first season from distributor Sphere Abacus and is placing it inside its own global comedy catalog.

A garden-shed experiment opens a story about grief

The series follows Michael Sleep, a bereaved office worker in Manchester whose life has narrowed around an unsatisfying job and a solitary home routine. After an experiment in his garden shed, two tiny figures appear in a matchbox and begin offering advice. Their guidance is not reliably practical, but it pushes Michael back toward the people and possibilities he has avoided.

Pearce Quigley leads the cast as Michael, with Lauren Patel, Michael Palin, Sophie Willan, Jon Pointing, Paul Kaye and Crook among the ensemble. The premise combines live action with animation, allowing the miniature prophets to feel like part of Michael's physical world without pretending that his grief can be solved by one magical intervention.

Mackenzie Crook controls the series' complete creative line

Crook created, wrote and directed all six episodes. That continuity matters for a comedy whose tone has to move between melancholy, absurd advice and small changes in everyday behavior. The show was made by Treasure Trove Productions and Blue House Productions, with the Manchester setting remaining central rather than serving as an interchangeable backdrop.

Apple's release does not change the episode count or repackage the program as a new season. It is the same first season that UK viewers could watch through the BBC, now receiving a defined Apple TV date in other territories. Apple has not announced a second-season order in the acquisition release.

Its Series Mania wins help explain the international pickup

Small Prophets won Best Series in the International Panorama competition at Series Mania 2026, while Lauren Patel received the competition's Best Actress award. Festival recognition does not guarantee that the comedy will suit every viewer, but it provides independent context for Apple's decision to bring a finished British series to more markets.

For viewers outside the UK, all six episodes are due on Apple TV on October 7. UK viewers face the less convenient version of the deal: the series already had its BBC run, but its Apple TV availability is delayed until 2027. Keeping those two windows separate is essential, because the same announcement creates two very different answers to the question of when the show can be watched.
