Disney has put a number on a business it spent years licensing out. Consumer spending across Disney Games averaged $3.5 billion annually over four years and exceeded $4 billion in the most recent fiscal year, according to the company's own accounting published on 13 August.
Nine franchises above a billion dollars each
Disney says its portfolio contains nine franchises that have each grossed more than $1 billion at retail, spanning Kingdom Hearts, Marvel Strike Force, Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls, Marvel Rivals, Disney Solitaire, Disney Tsum Tsum, Disney Magic Kingdoms and Lucasfilm Games' output across more than 20 genres. The Disney and Pixar mobile portfolio has passed one billion installs since 2014.
Marvel Rivals is doing an unusual amount of the work
One title dominates the engagement story. Disney reports 40 million players worldwide for Marvel Rivals, with 60 percent of them under 24, plus 285 million Twitch viewing hours in 2025 and a Discord community of 4.4 million — which the company describes as the largest in gaming.
That age skew is the strategically interesting number rather than the headline dollar figure. A media company whose theatrical and linear audiences trend older has found a property where three in five players are under 24.
Building for games first
Sean Shoptaw, executive vice president of games and digital entertainment, ties the numbers to a commissioning change: original stories designed for games rather than adaptations of films and series. "Games have become a foundational part of the broader entertainment landscape," he says.
The evidence for the shift is thinner than the evidence for the revenue. Marvel's Wolverine, arriving in September, is an original story rather than a film tie-in, and Disney points to an Epic Games partnership building a persistent entertainment universe around Fortnite. It also cites research that 84 percent of families enjoy seeing familiar characters move between games and video content — a figure that argues for crossover, not for original game-first storytelling.
