Enola Holmes 3 is streaming on Netflix. Millie Bobby Brown returns as Sherlock Holmes's younger sister, and the case at the centre of the film is not being held back: as Enola heads to the altar to marry Lord Tewkesbury, played by Louis Partridge, she learns that Sherlock, played by Henry Cavill, has been kidnapped.
The wedding and the case are the same story
The structure is what makes this entry different from the first two. Enola is on the case immediately while also working through her own complicated feelings about marriage, so the personal and professional threads are not running in parallel — they interrupt each other. Netflix describes the mystery as more tangled and treacherous than any she has faced.
The film puts a precise date on it. Enola and Tewkesbury's wedding invitation reads June 21, 1886, at St. Paul's Cathedral in Malta, and the film is set in that year. The pair were 16 and 17 when the series began; both are now in their early twenties.
A new director, from an unexpected place
Philip Barantini directs, having made the one-take crime drama Adolescence. That is a marked change of register for a series built on brisk, fourth-wall-breaking adventure, and it is the most interesting production decision attached to this instalment.
Jack Thorne returns to write, having scripted both previous films, working again from Nancy Springer's The Enola Holmes Mysteries novels — so the continuity sits with the writing while the direction changes hands.
