Dave Bautista has closed his deal to play Kratos in Prime Video's God of War series, Deadline reported on August 20. He replaces Ryan Hurst, who tore a bicep performing a stunt in late June, four months into a shoot that had begun in Vancouver in February.
The detail that reframes everything else: none of that footage is being used. Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television are starting the season again, with prep this month and cameras rolling in mid-October.
Four months of a two-season shoot are being thrown away
The series was ordered for two seasons filming back to back, which remains the plan. Frederick E.O. Toye — an Emmy winner for Shōgun, with The Boys and Fallout also behind him — directed the first two episodes with Hurst and will direct them again with Bautista.
Reshooting a premiere with the same director and a different lead is a specific kind of expensive. Sets, schedules and supporting cast availability all have to be reassembled, and a back-to-back two-season plan has very little slack in it. That the studios chose this over recasting mid-stream or writing around the injury says they consider the first two episodes foundational.
Eight weeks is a short runway for this particular role
Between prep starting and an October camera date, Bautista has roughly eight weeks to reach the physical condition the part assumes. Deadline notes his wrestling background and the bulking he did recently for the new Highlander film as reasons that is achievable rather than reckless.
It is also only his second series-regular role, after the second season of Apple's See. Kratos is a lead who carries scenes largely through stillness and restraint, which is a different demand from the ensemble work most of his film career has involved.
The recast lands on a design argument that was already running
Deadline notes that the first-look image released in February drew intense online argument about the character's look. Bautista's casting reads as a different answer to that question, though nobody at either studio has said so.
This is worth stating carefully. A production replacing an injured actor is not a referendum on the previous performance, and Hurst has not commented publicly. What can be said is that the studios reached out to Bautista shortly after deciding to recast, which suggests a specific idea of what they now want rather than a scramble for whoever was free.
What the show is adapting
Ronald D. Moore is the writer, showrunner and executive producer. The series follows Kratos and his son Atreus — played by Callum Vinson — carrying the ashes of Faye, his wife and Atreus's mother, on a journey through the Norse realms. That is the 2018 game's spine, not the Greek saga that preceded it.
