Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 returns to Night City on October 20 with a new cast

CD Projekt Red and Trigger's anime comes back on October 20 as a ten-episode standalone story. None of the first season's characters carry over, and the new lead is a former legend living without cyberware.

A wide-eyed animated character with spiked blonde hair fills the frame in Netflix's official teaser artwork for Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 premieres on Netflix on October 20, and CD Projekt Red's official site is explicit about what it is not: a continuation. The ten-episode season tells a standalone story in Night City with an entirely new cast.

That decision is the whole shape of the show. The first season ended somewhere it could not credibly return from, and rather than find a way around that, the studios have kept the city and replaced everyone in it.

The lead has given up the thing the setting runs on

Weak is described as a washed-up cyberpunk legend now forced to live without chrome, searching for purpose in a world that has moved on. In a setting where cybernetic augmentation is both the power fantasy and the thing that destroys people, building a protagonist around its absence is a genuine inversion of the first season's arc.

Running alongside him is D, a nomad on a revenge path that brings him close to corporate secrets. CD Projekt Red frames the season as a story about family, obsession and legacy — three words that describe the first season too, arriving at them from the opposite direction.

The Trigger partnership survived the change in scope

Trigger returns as the animation studio, with Kai Ikarashi directing and Kanno Ichigo as lead character designer. Bartosz Sztybor and Masahiko Otsuka, who shaped the first season's story, are back. CD Projekt Red describes the result as a rawer and more brutal take on the same world.

Continuity of crew matters more here than continuity of character. The first season's reputation rests on a specific register — kinetic animation, a soundtrack doing structural work, an ending it earned rather than engineered. A new cast under the same creative leadership is a much safer proposition than the reverse.

Trigger's back catalogue is the other half of that argument. CD Projekt Red's site names Little Witch Academia, Delicious in Dungeon and Promare among the studio's work — a range spanning whimsy and hard action, which is why the first Edgerunners could hold a joke and a death in the same episode without either landing wrong.

The game connection is looser this time

The first season arrived while Cyberpunk 2077 was rebuilding its reputation and functioned, whatever anyone intended, as an argument for revisiting the game. CD Projekt Red is now working on the sequel, and Edgerunners 2 lands without an accompanying update to prop up.

That leaves it to succeed as television rather than as marketing, which is a healthier place for an adaptation to stand and a harder one. Netflix has released successive teasers through the summer without publishing an episode-by-episode schedule; the ten episodes are expected on the premiere date.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 arrives on Netflix on October 20, 2026. Ten episodes, standalone story, no returning characters announced.
