GTA 6 Extended Look: The Gameplay Systems Rockstar Actually Showed

Rockstar's 26-minute presentation shows police descriptions that track more than a stolen car, more deliberate combat, rapid character switching and a broad set of activities across Leonida.

Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look finally makes GTA 6 possible to picture as a game rather than a sequence of cinematic promises. Rockstar released the 26-minute presentation on August 27 and labels every shot as in-game footage captured on PlayStation 5. The useful changes are not only visual: police searches carry more information, combat offers more specific choices, and Jason and Lucia can trade playable roles during a job.

That is a different story from the six-hour Netflix-first release window. With the presentation now freely available through Rockstar and YouTube, the important question is what its interfaces and playable sequences actually establish.

Police remember the people, vehicle and clothes involved

The wanted interface shown in the presentation can describe the suspect, the vehicle, the clothes being worn and whether Jason and Lucia are travelling together or alone. That turns escape into more than breaking line of sight in the same stolen car. Changing a vehicle or outfit, or separating the pair, can alter what police are looking for.

The displayed wanted scale also reaches six stars, one beyond GTA V's five. A larger number by itself says little about difficulty, but the descriptive search system has a clearer consequence: the evidence left by a crime appears to shape the pursuit that follows. The video does not explain how long descriptions persist, how witnesses work or how easily each clue can be cleared.

Combat offers more deliberate choices without becoming a tactical shooter

Several encounters show body-part targeting, a focus state that slows the action, weapons taken from fallen enemies and melee prompts with more than one response. Shooting a leg instead of centring every encounter on a headshot could create room to disable or interrupt an opponent, although Rockstar has not published the damage rules behind the highlighted zones.

The presentation also makes the transition between roles look fast. One lead can drive while the other fires, and control can move between Jason and Lucia during action without presenting a conventional loading screen. That does not confirm cooperative multiplayer; it shows a single-player mission able to change the player's job while the scene continues.

Leonida is built for downtime as well as robberies

The activities are not presented as one interchangeable minigame menu. They are spread across the geography and lifestyles of Leonida, from urban exercise and organised racing to water travel and diving. The footage shows:

  • basketball and weight training;
  • car racing on a track and motocross;
  • kayaks, fanboats and personal watercraft;
  • scuba diving and BASE jumping.

Seeing an activity is not the same as knowing its depth. Rockstar has not said which are repeatable, whether they have progression, or how many locations support them. What the montage does establish is a world designed to keep the player occupied between authored jobs, not only on the route to the next mission marker.

The full map and GTA Online remain outside the frame

Rockstar did not reveal a complete map, define the final size of Leonida or explain the next version of GTA Online. Those omissions matter because unofficial maps and multiplayer claims continue to circulate beside the sanctioned footage. The Extended Look can confirm only what it displays; absence from the video is not proof that a feature will be absent from the game.

Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled for November 19, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Until Rockstar publishes fuller system descriptions or unrestricted play becomes available, the strongest confirmed shift is smaller and more useful than a map-size boast: crimes appear to leave readable consequences, and the game gives the player more ways to respond to them.
