The LEGO Donkey Kong Arcade set, item number 72051, reached stores on August 1 at a regular price of $199.99, after being shown publicly for the first time at San Diego Comic-Con. Nintendo puts the build at 1,367 pieces and aims it at adult fans of classic arcade games and retro decor.
The cabinet has working mechanics, not a printed screen
The detail that separates this set from a display replica is that it moves. Nintendo's description has a lever that releases one of 21 barrels at a time, a joystick that moves Jumpman across the build, and a button that makes him jump the barrels. A further mechanism circulates the barrels in a continuous loop, so a run does not need to be reset by hand between attempts. That is a kinetic model built around the original game's central action rather than a static shelf piece.
It is still not an emulation device. Nothing in Nintendo's announcement suggests the set runs the 1981 game or contains any electronics that reproduce it, and buyers comparing it against plug-and-play arcade hardware should treat those as different categories of product.
What it reproduces from the original cabinet
The set recreates the cabinet's form along with its cast: Jumpman, Donkey Kong and Lady, plus the scaffold, ladder and hammer details Nintendo attributes to the original game. Nintendo's own wording uses Jumpman and Lady rather than the later Mario and Pauline, which matches how the 1981 release credited the characters.
