Asobo Studio's Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy launches on 27 August 2026 for Xbox Series X|S and PC, included with Game Pass at launch and supporting Xbox Play Anywhere. Focus Entertainment publishes. It is a prequel set 15 years before A Plague Tale: Requiem, and it changes more about the series than its timeline.
Combat replaces hiding
The previous games asked players to avoid fights they could not win. Asobo co-founder David Dedeine is direct about the break: "the fact that it's no longer a pure stealth game, with action and combat elements being much more present, really changed the formula." Encounters are built around parries and strikes rather than distraction and line-of-sight management.
That change reaches level design too. Level designer Vincent Trinel describes the problem inverting: "The challenge is the opposite now, we have to be careful about where the player can go and restrict that." A protagonist who can fight and climb needs boundaries a hiding child never did.
Minoan Crete instead of medieval France
Players control Sophia, described by Asobo as a young plunderer exploring the Minotaur's Island to uncover her past and confront a curse. The setting draws on ancient Minoan civilisation rather than the plague-era Europe the series built its identity on, and Asobo says the tone is lighter than Requiem's.
Lead writer Carol Ann Bañuls frames the continuity problem this created: "The hardest thing was being able to respect the plague lore in Sophia's story." Character artist Marco Puricelli adds that the team did not "want to abandon what contributed to the franchise's success" — which is the tension worth watching, because a lighter action game set on a Greek island shares little surface DNA with the games that made the series' name.
A grappling hook and a stolen sphere
Two systems carry the new traversal and puzzle load. A grappling hook reaches roughly 10 metres and opens vertical routes. A stolen Minoan sphere manipulates light, which is the puzzle spine — and a pointed choice for a series whose earlier games used light to hold back rats. Chase sequences and survival pressure from a pursuing supernatural presence round out the loop.
Newcomers are the intended audience
A prequel on Game Pass with a new protagonist and a new genre is aimed at people who never played the first two games. Actress Anna Demetriou, who plays Sophia, argues the throughline is thematic rather than mechanical: "the themes are the beating heart of the Plague Tale franchise." Whether that holds without the stealth is the question the reviews will answer.
