Disney used its D23 Entertainment Showcase on 14 August to put dates on a slate that now runs to 2029. Read as a calendar it is a routine studio update. Read as a strategy document, it shows how few of the company's dated theatrical films over the next three years are new stories.
Star Wars returns to cinemas on 28 May 2027
Star Wars: Starfighter is dated 28 May 2027, with a cast Disney lists as Ryan Gosling, Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre and Amy Adams. On television, Ahsoka season two is set for 20 January 2027 on Disney+, with Rosario Dawson and Hayden Christensen returning.
Marvel recasts the X-Men for May 2028
The untitled X-Men film is dated 5 May 2028 and arrives with an almost entirely new ensemble: Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Kit Connor as Scott Summers, Christopher Abbott as Professor Xavier, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Inde Navarrette as Rogue, Maya Boyd as Storm and Adam Driver as Nathaniel Milbury.
Before that, Avengers: Doomsday holds 18 December 2026 and VisionQuest reaches Disney+ on 14 October 2026.
Pixar has four dated films, three of them originals
Pixar is the part of the slate least dependent on existing properties. Gatto is dated 5 March 2027 with Mark Ruffalo and Laurence Fishburne, Ghost Market lands in March 2028, and Incredibles 3 on 16 June 2028 is followed by Coco 2 in November 2029.
Everything else is a sequel or a remake
Walt Disney Animation's dated originals are Disney's Hexed on 25 November 2026, with Hailee Steinfeld, Rashida Jones, Walton Goggins and Jodie Foster, and Clay in 2028. Around them sit Frozen 3 on 24 November 2027 and Zootopia 3, named but undated and described as early in development.
The live-action column is entirely revivals: Tangled on 31 March 2028 with Teagan Croft and Milo Manheim, and Lilo & Stitch 2 on 26 May 2028 with Maia Kealoha returning. Elsewhere the company dated The Bluey Movie for 6 August 2027, The Simpsons Movie for 3 September 2027, and Ice Age: Boiling Point for 5 February 2027.
Counted honestly, four of Disney's dated theatrical films through 2029 are not sequels, remakes or franchise entries, and three of those are Pixar's. That is the shape of the slate, and it is the number worth revisiting when the 2028 titles start moving.
