Helldivers 2 sends you through a wormhole in Devoid of Liberty

Arrowhead's update opens a stabilised wormhole on Rirga Bay and drops squads onto Void planets where objectives are randomised per operation rather than fixed in advance.

Devoid of Liberty is the update that finally explains where the Illuminate have been operating from. It opens a new frontier called the Void, and the way missions are generated there breaks a pattern Helldivers 2 has followed since launch.

The Gateway opens on Rirga Bay

Access runs through the Gateway, a wormhole stabilised over Rirga Bay using Voteless tissue samples gathered during the Census Thunder campaign. That detail matters for anyone who sat out the campaign: the fiction ties the new frontier directly to a community war effort rather than dropping it in unannounced.

Space on the far side does not behave normally. Arrowhead describes the Void as having no stars and no sky to see from a planet's surface, with the worlds pulled into it "transformed, mutated, and reborn" — holding Illuminate ruins and ancient technologies that squads are told to document and destroy.

It is worth noting how Arrowhead has framed that entry point. The Ministry of Science is credited with working out how to open and stabilise the wormhole, but only using research the player base secured during Census Thunder. The studio is tying a permanent structural change to a finished community campaign rather than patching in a new frontier and explaining it afterwards.

Seasse is the planet you are actually trying to reach

The Void is not an open-ended frontier. There is a Source Planet, formerly known as Seasse, and the objective is to find and liberate it. Arrowhead describes it as a shade of its former glory, consumed by the Void's flora and occupied by the Wretch, the Crusher, and what the studio calls the abominable lands in which they dwell.

Those two units are the only new enemies Arrowhead names. No new stratagems or weapons appear in the announcement either, which is worth knowing before you plan a build around unreleased gear.

Randomised objectives replace the linear dive

The most consequential change is structural. Where dives were previously more linear, every Void operation now carries several randomised primary objectives. That removes the planning step veteran squads rely on: you can no longer read the mission list and bring the exact stratagems it calls for, so a flexible loadout beats a specialised one on a first run.

The tactical video camera is the clearest sign of what that variety looks like. Alongside destroying Illuminate structures, squads run reconnaissance and documentation objectives — an objective type built around recording rather than demolition, which is a different tempo from the usual extract-under-fire rhythm.

Unlock the second extraction before you need it

Arrowhead is explicit that the Void is dangerous and time matters: complete objectives and extract. Two systems exist to keep a squad alive. Secondary extraction zones can be unlocked on Void planets, giving a second route back to the Destroyer when the primary is compromised, and SEAF support squads can be brought in to push forward with you.

Because those zones are unlocked rather than granted, the practical order of operations inverts. Securing the backup extraction early is worth more than banking the time, since a randomised objective set can turn a routine dive into a retreat without warning.

Devoid of Liberty is live now, as of 23 August 2026. Gameplay requires internet access and a paid console subscription, sold separately.
