Proto Man is playable in Mega Man: Dual Override, but he is not a red-suited copy of Mega Man. Capcom's September 16 combat breakdown positions him as a close-range fighter: the Proto Buster hits hardest at point-blank range, while the Proto Shield doubles as an attack and a defensive tool. The game is slated for spring 2027 on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.
Boss victories build a shield loadout, not copied weapons
Mega Man copies Robot Master powers. Proto Man instead unlocks attacks after defeating bosses, many centered on his shield, and can call on multiple Shield Actions without swapping between them. That distinction matters in a fight: he has to close the gap before his stronger attacks pay off, then use the shield to keep moving or protect the space he has gained.
There is a brake on that pressure. Capcom says repeated use of Proto Man's special skills raises his heat, so an aggressive sequence has a resource cost rather than being a free loop. The new Override state briefly boosts either hero's power but leaves them vulnerable when it ends. Together, those systems make timing an offensive decision as well as a survival decision; Capcom has not published exact heat thresholds or recovery values.
The two heroes also share a build system
Dual Override includes more than 50 Custom Chips with active or passive effects. Capcom has not detailed every chip, but the announced system suggests room to reinforce Proto Man's offense or compensate for the danger of fighting up close. The useful distinction for players choosing a hero is clear already: Mega Man favors range and copied powers, while Proto Man trades safety for a flexible shield kit.
