No Man's Sky Cosmos turns shipwreck salvage into a reason to settle in space

The free update adds a new loop between wrecks, outposts and player-built stations. Salvage has value, but taking too much can destroy the ship around you.

A wreck in No Man's Sky can now be both a resource deposit and a trap. Cosmos, update 7.0, lets explorers tear useful material from derelict space hulks, but damaging their structure too far can trigger a meltdown. The update arrived on PS5 on September 9 as a free download for existing players.

The interesting change is the connection between activities. The new system map helps locate space destinations; wrecks supply salvage; outposts process and trade it; and station construction gives that material another purpose. Space becomes somewhere to establish a routine, rather than merely the distance between planets.

The salvage tool and the cargo ship do different jobs

Hello Games' notes identify the Gravitino Coil for manipulating physical salvage and a Corvette-class ship fitted with a Tractor Beam for collecting it. Spacewalking is available beyond Corvette pilots, but that does not make every ship equivalent for hauling salvage.

This creates a practical distinction for returning players: being able to reach a wreck is not the same as arriving equipped to carry its contents away. The developer also describes scanning for the most valuable finds before stripping a hulk. The risk rewards choosing a haul, rather than assuming every wreck should be emptied.

A station can become a group's shared address

Players can build free-floating bases, become station directors and customise station spaces. A director can also establish an alliance, giving a group a name and banner. For friends, the useful connection is a shared destination with a building project attached, instead of only agreeing on the next planet to visit.

The anniversary expedition, Our Journey Continues, offers another route back: its milestones revisit the game's update history. Explorers interested in the new economy can follow the salvage loop; returning players looking for a guided tour have a separate activity built around that history.
