Serious Sam: Shatterverse launches on August 31, 2026 with a clear structural change for the series: this is a roguelite first-person shooter built for one to five players, not a fixed campaign that happens to include co-op. Behaviour Interactive developed the spin-off and Devolver Digital is publishing it, with the Steam version listing online cooperative play and cross-platform multiplayer.
The premise fractures Sam Stone across shifting universes, allowing five alternate versions of the hero to fight together. That is not only a story explanation for duplicate Sams. It gives a full group five positions in the arena while the game continues to use the oversized enemy waves, heavy weapons and deliberate absurdity associated with Serious Sam.
Every run combines temporary power with permanent options
A run moves through changing worlds and offers boons that modify the current build. Devolver also describes run modifiers that can increase the danger in exchange for better rewards. The important distinction is between power that helps the current attempt and possibilities that remain available afterward: progress expands the pool of weapons, abilities and upgrade paths that future runs can draw from.
That structure should make failed runs productive without making them identical. Players can chase a specific combination, accept a harsher modifier or adapt when the expected upgrade does not appear. Neither the Steam page nor Devolver's overview publishes drop rates or a complete progression table, so the eventual pace of unlocks cannot be judged from the store description alone.
Five lieutenants give the run a visible backbone
Shatterverse identifies five lieutenants as major obstacles on the route through its dimensions. Each is positioned as a boss encounter that tests a build before the next layer of the run. Familiar enemies return beside new monsters, which gives the spin-off a recognizable combat vocabulary while leaving room for attacks designed around a larger cooperative squad.
Five-player support is the unusual number here. Many cooperative shooters are balanced around three or four participants; a fifth Sam can add more firepower, more targets for the horde and more visual noise. The official material confirms the player count but does not detail enemy scaling, revive rules or whether a run can continue when someone disconnects.
The PC version needs little storage but a stronger GPU for high settings
Steam lists 10 GB of available storage for both minimum and recommended configurations. The minimum target pairs 8 GB of memory with a GeForce GTX 1050 Ti or Radeon RX 560X for 1080p at 30 frames per second on low settings. The recommended target moves to 16 GB of memory and a GeForce RTX 2080 or Radeon RX 7600 for 1080p at 60 frames per second on high settings.
Those specifications describe targets, not measured performance, and players should still check the live store page before buying in case the requirements change after launch. What is fixed on day one is the pitch: Shatterverse compresses Serious Sam's horde shooting into repeatable sessions, then uses five-player co-op and persistent unlocks to make the next charge different from the last.
