Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition has added the Danes, Saxons and Varangians through The Viking Sagas expansion. The paid package also contains a 15-scenario story split across three campaigns following Harald Hardrada from Scandinavia through Constantinople and toward England in 1066.

The three armies reward different kinds of pressure

Danes are built around fast coastal raids, productive food gathering and gold gained from destroying buildings. Saxons answer with fortified towns, strong infantry and a navy designed to contest those attacks. Varangians move east through trade and rivers, combining extra gold income with cavalry, ships and Varangian Guards.

The differences give the expansion a clear internal triangle: raiding, holding territory and converting commerce into military reach. Longships become a regional unit shared by the new civilizations and the existing Vikings rather than remaining exclusive to one roster.

Part of the update is free without the expansion

Owners of the base game receive the revised Viking civilization without buying the DLC. World’s Edge also updated the Hastings, Vinlandsaga and York historical battles, plus selected Victors & Vanquished scenarios, to use the new civilizations and regional units. The Viking Sagas itself is sold on Steam, Microsoft Store, Xbox and PlayStation 5.
