It Takes Two has launched on Nintendo Switch 2 for $39.99, giving Hazelight's co-op adventure higher resolution, improved frame rates and richer visual effects. The release date is October 15 in most regions and October 16 in Japan, Australia, New Zealand and South Korea because of regional time-zone differences.
The new version supports cross-play between Nintendo Switch 2, PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. The original Nintendo Switch version is excluded from that shared cross-play pool, but EA says Switch 2 players can connect with Switch players through GameShare.
Friend's Pass still needs one full copy
The free Friend's Pass lets a guest install a trial client and join a player who owns the complete game. It does not turn the full game into a free download for both people: one participant must own It Takes Two, both need the relevant platform accounts, and online play requires an internet connection on supported platforms.
That distinction matters because the game is designed entirely around two-player cooperation. The Switch 2 release preserves the option to play together without buying two copies while widening the potential partner pool beyond Nintendo hardware.
Who qualifies for the free Switch 2 upgrade
Players who already own It Takes Two on Nintendo Switch can redeem the Switch 2 version at no additional charge in supported regions. The offer requires the same Nintendo Account that owns the Switch release, internet access and access to Nintendo eShop; redemption is available through the store or the in-game offer screen on Switch 2.
EA's terms exclude Japan, Korea, Hong Kong and Taiwan from the free offer. Japan receives a low-cost upgrade instead because of legal restrictions. Buyers elsewhere should still verify the offer on their own account before purchasing a second copy, as retailer listings and regional terms can vary.
The result is primarily an accessibility and compatibility release rather than a new campaign: Cody and May's full story is unchanged, but existing Nintendo owners can move to the newer hardware and new buyers can play with friends across most current platforms.
