Minecraft on Switch 2 Launches October 27: Prices, Free Upgrade and Editions

The native Switch 2 release starts at $29.99 in the US, while eligible digital Switch owners can claim the Standard Edition free for a limited time. Split-screen players will not get its headline Vibrant Visuals upgrade.

Minecraft launches natively on Nintendo Switch 2 on Tuesday, October 27, 2026. As checked on October 24, Nintendo's US store lists the digital Standard Edition at $29.99, the Deluxe Collection at $39.99 and the Ultimate Collection at $49.99. Mojang and Nintendo have announced the date, but neither opened source gives a universal unlock hour.

The least expensive route is reserved for existing digital owners. People who already own Minecraft digitally on the original Switch can claim the digital Switch 2 Standard Edition through Nintendo eShop at no extra cost until the end of January 2027 in most territories. Mojang lists small fees instead in Japan, Taiwan and Thailand; it has not confirmed the offer's terms for Israel, so the US prices should not be treated as local pricing.

The three editions change add-ons and Minecoins, not the base game

  • Standard Edition — $29.99 in the US. It contains the Switch 2 game and the updated Super Mario Mash-Up Pack.
  • Deluxe Collection — $39.99 in the US. It adds the Celebration Food, Rescue Dogs and Plenty O'Blocks add-ons, three Character Creator items and 700 Minecoins.
  • Ultimate Collection — $49.99 in the US. It includes those three add-ons plus Decocraft and Weapons + Tools, five Character Creator items and 1,000 Minecoins.

All three versions include the same base game and the Super Mario pack with Vibrant Visuals support. The higher prices buy Marketplace add-ons, cosmetics and Minecoins rather than an exclusive mode or campaign. Mojang also warns that the included Minecoins, and coins bought inside Minecraft on a Nintendo device, must be spent within Nintendo's ecosystem.

The free upgrade excludes physical copies

The free Standard Edition offer applies to owners of the digital Switch version and is available only through Nintendo eShop. Mojang describes it as running until the end of January 2027; Nintendo's US product page gives the related upgrade window as October 27, 2026 at 9 a.m. PT through January 31, 2027 at 9 a.m. PT. That clock is attached to the upgrade promotion, not a confirmed worldwide launch time for the game.

Owners of a physical Switch copy are not promised the free Standard Edition. Nintendo instead says anyone, including physical owners, who launches the original Switch game on a Switch 2 during that window will receive an in-game message offering the digital Ultimate Collection at a discount. The public page does not state the discount amount, so physical owners cannot yet compare that route with the $49.99 US list price from the published details alone.

Vibrant Visuals improves the picture, except in split-screen

The native edition's main technical addition is Vibrant Visuals, enabled by default according to Mojang. It adds directional lighting, volumetric fog, reflections and more pronounced shadows, and existing Switch worlds can carry over. The limitation matters for couch play: Vibrant Visuals is unavailable in split-screen and may also be disabled in certain Marketplace worlds and content. Cross-platform play requires a Microsoft account, while online console multiplayer requires Nintendo Switch Online.

Two gamescom hands-ons agreed that the visual upgrade was noticeable, but they did not establish final performance. NintendoFans.de reported repeated stutters in its non-final build, while Portuguese outlet Starbit said its television demo ran smoothly and did not test handheld play. No launch reviews were available in the opened sources, and Mojang has not published a final frame-rate or resolution target. Treat those previews as build-specific observations, not a review consensus.

For digital Switch owners, claiming the free Standard Edition before the January deadline is the clear first step. Everyone else is choosing between a familiar $29.99 base game and bundles of Marketplace content; households that mainly play split-screen should know that the version's biggest visual feature will not be active in their usual mode.
