Orbitals is out now as a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive. The cooperative adventure follows Maki and Omura as they try to escape a cosmic storm around their home station, and every supported play mode is built for two players. The important buying detail is that two copies are not always necessary.
Choose the setup that matches the two consoles
- Couch co-op: one Switch 2, one copy of the game and two controller sets.
- Local GameShare: a Switch 2 owner can share nearby with a compatible original Switch, Switch Lite or Switch OLED.
- Online GameShare: both players use Switch 2, while one copy is shared through GameChat.
- Friend's Pass online: both players use Switch 2; the owner invites a friend who downloads the free pass.
The Friend's Pass provides the invited player with access to the full adventure while connected to the owner. It is therefore different from the separate free local co-op demo, which contains only the opening chapter. A pair that wants to test the game in the same room can begin with the demo; a remote pair needs an owner and the pass.
Online play adds account and subscription requirements
Shapefarm says Nintendo Switch Online is required for both players when using online GameShare through GameChat or the Friend's Pass online. Both participants also need Switch 2 hardware for those remote options. The original Switch family can join through local GameShare, but it cannot serve as the host and is not listed for the online arrangements.
Nintendo's store listing also notes that online services, Nintendo Accounts and GameShare availability can vary by country. That makes the advertised one-copy option real but conditional: players should confirm that both accounts can access the required services before planning a remote session.
Because progress depends on cooperation, the second player is not merely controlling a temporary helper. The shared-copy systems preserve the intended two-character adventure while lowering the purchase barrier; they do not add matchmaking with an unknown partner.
The launch is smaller in storage than in screen count
Nintendo estimates the download at 9.8 GB and lists support for two local or two online players. The game uses a split-screen presentation inspired by animated science-fiction adventures, so the core experience does not convert into a solo mode when a partner is absent.
For households with one Switch 2, couch co-op is the simplest route. For two nearby systems, local GameShare can include older Switch hardware. For players in different locations, the deciding question is whether both people have Switch 2 consoles and Nintendo Switch Online; if they do, one purchased copy can still cover the pair.
